Sandy Hessler and Brolin Mewejje met for the first time in 2003 when Brolin moved from Uganda to Boston at age 11. In the years since, Brolin has learned to navigate vastly different cultures. He is currently a medical student at Westminster University and hopes to be the first African snowboarder in the Olympics. Together they have navigated disruptions of culture, family expectations, health challenges and life to learn what it means to be a family. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
